About Thanda Safari
THANDA SAFARI
Thanda Safari is a protected Nature Reserve, having been proclaimed in October 2015, and is approximately 14 000 hectares in size. It is located in northern KwaZulu Natal where legendary King Shaka once roamed and was once the royal hunting grounds. In 1895, the Mdletshe Game Reserve where Thanda Safari is situated was proclaimed as the first protected reserve in Africa, although was deproclaimed in 1907 due to a lack of water.
Thanda Safari is 32 degrees south of the equator and uses South African Standard Time (SAST), which is two hours ahead of Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). It is surrounded by a number of other game reserves in the region, and is just north of the world-famous Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve
Getting to Thanda Safari.
LOCATION
DRIVE: Thanda Safari is situated in northern KwaZulu-Natal, some 260km north of Durban. From Durban, take the N2 towards Hluhluwe. Approximately 20km (12 miles) past the turn-off for Hluhluwe, turn left onto the D242, and continue for approximately 5km (3 miles) on the gravel road to the Thanda Safari gate on the right.
FLY: If you are flying into local Richards Bay Airport or King Shaka International Airport in Durban, a transfer can be arranged, where our team will meet you and drive you to the reserve. International guests often fly to South Africa via O.R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.
