As part of the expansion of Thanda Private Game Reserve to 14000-ha, reserve management identified the need to ensure the sustainability of wildlife in the area, and to assist with the development of local communities. These needs colminated in the initiation of a research centre, in conjunction with Space for Elephants Foundation.

South Africa offers a unique environment in which to spend time volunteering abroad, and is a thriving and lively destination for a work experience placement. Projects are available for anyone interested in volunteering in this developing country. Our conservation placement is based at Thanda Private Game Reserve in northern KZN.

Thanda Private Game Reserve will serve as a model study area to develop adaptive research and management strategies on a small scale, from which results can be used to implement strategies on regional scales in the future.

Volunteers will get the chance to do varied and hands-on work, while living outdoors in the bushveld among the big five, kudu, impala, baboons, crocodile, cheetah and wild dog.

Volunteers experienced and interested in the following research topics are invited to apply for a volunteer programme:

• Geology
• Resource quantification and qualification (soil water, vegetation)
• Large herbivore and predator status
• Biodiversity status
• Archaeology and Anthropology

COST: R21 500 per volunteer or student per month.

The cost for participation in the volunteer programme includes all meals, accommodation, a vehicle to be shared by volunteers, centre facilities, administration fees, conservation fees, field resources and reserve transport, and transfers to and from the airport in Richards Bay.

Accommodation at base camp is in large but basic same-sex dormitory bedrooms surrounding a large open-air communal area with a fire pit and kitchen facilities. Hot water and flushing toilets are provided. Volunteers will receive three meals per day.

Additional costs include: flights, medical insurance and visas if applicable.
