Climate

Thanda is located in a sub-tropical, semi-arid area and the climate is very warm with average daily temperatures spanning 20°C – 30°C. Because Thanda is situated so close to the Indian Ocean, warmed by the Agulhas sea current, the summers are not as short as Mpumalanga and the winters are not as cold.

Essentials

Warm clothing for winter game drives is essential and it is advisable to bring a good pair of walking shoes as well as a sun hat. Don’t forget your camera!

Malaria

KwaZulu-Natal is classified a low risk malaria area and Thanda has been declared 99% malaria-free by the World Health Organisation. It is recommended that guests use a mosquito repellent on exposed skin; insect repellent is provided in both the tents and the villas.

Electricity

The voltage is 220/250 V and three-point round pin plugs are used in South Africa. Each of the villas in the main lodge is equipped with universal plugs. The tented camp does not have electricity; lighting is provided by paraffin lanterns and boma fires.

Communication

Each villa has a telephone and there is good internet connection in the public areas of the main lodge. There is no internet facility at the tented camp nor are there any telephones owing to the absence of electricity. There is reception for mobile phones in some parts of the reserve, but mountains do obstruct signal in some areas.

* For persons wishing to reach guests at the lodge, the telephone number is +27(0)35 573 1899 and the fax line +27(0)35 573 1877.
